Share Obituary!

Thomas C. Eckerd departed his earthly body on October 5, 2013.  He is survived by Pearl V. Eckerd, a loving wife of 60 years, 2 sons – Bruce and Thomas, 3 daughters – Candace Walsh, Robin Stouch and Susan Hutchens, also 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  In addition there are 2 brothers – John and Walter, 1 sister – Eileen Trout.

Born in Harrisburg, PA on April 4, 1934, he was the son to the late George and Carrie (Wise) Eckerd. Tom served in the Army National Guard and worked as a dock worker for Red Star Express.  Over the years when he wasn’t working he enjoyed boats, trains, “going to camp”, and teaching the youngsters. He enjoyed and was always eager to share his knowledge.

He was lovingly referred to as dad and grandpa by not only his natural family but by many others.  Over the years his home was opened to many “kids” who needed a place to stay. Tom did not know any strangers but only knew friends in his caring and friendly way. He was always ready to give everyone a reason to smile or laugh when talking to a new or old friend. He was ready to give a helping hand to all who were in need. Tom was an inspiration to his family and friends.  He won an award from “United Cerebral Palsy of Central Pennsylvania” for his commitment to the community.

A viewing will be held at Sullivan’s Funeral Home in Enola, PA on Saturday, October 12th from 10AM to 11AM followed by a service at 11AM. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Harrisburg, PA.

The Sullivan Funeral Home is honored to serve the Eckerd family.
