Gloria “Jean” Koser, 83 died peacefully on August 10, 2025, at Cumberland Crossings Nursing home in Carlisle, PA. Born November 10, 1941, in Fort Leavenworth, KS, Jean was the daughter of the late Franklin P. and Gertrude (Mayhugh) Shoenberger.
Jean grew up as an Army brat, moving to different areas across the United States throughout her younger years. Her family finally settled in the Cumberland County, PA area where she graduated from Big Spring High School in Newville, PA. She was a loving homemaker and stay at home Mom until entering back into the workforce as a cook and then a dietician at the Perry Village Nursing home in New Bloomfield, PA for 10 years. After relocating to Carlisle, PA she pursued a career at the Moore Child Development Center on the Army War College Post of the Carlisle Barracks, where she earned her associates degree in childcare. She received various awards over her 26 years there as well as a promotion to the front desk and then to Administrative Assistant for the Center Director. She was also a member of The Meeting House Church in Carlisle, PA.
Jean loved being with her family and hosting any type of gathering in her home and going on picnics. She was an amazing cook and baker, she enjoyed crocheting, dancing and listening to music as well as traveling and taking photos and videos. She was a doting grandmother who loved spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as often as possible.
Jean was preceded in death by her former husband, Clarence W. Thumma and a daughter, Sharon L. Thumma. She leaves behind her husband, Charles V. Koser, a son Michael D. Thumma (Cindy), a daughter, Tracy A. Rusell (Warren), three stepsons, Carl E. Koser (Diane), Don G. Koser (Andi) and Ed W. Koser (Kim), as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Four Brothers, Walter E. Shoenberger, Franklin P. Shoenberger, Jr., Dwight W. Shoenberger, Richard A Shoenberger (Nancy) and one sister Arlene Adams.
A service will be held at The Meeting House-Carlisle Campus, 1155 Walnut Bottom Rd, Carlisle, PA on August 22, 2025, at 11:00AM in the Sanctuary, with a luncheon to follow. She will be deeply missed by all.
