Patricia Ann “Patty” McCown, 68 – loving wife, mother, and grandmother – went to be with the Lord Sept. 24 following a battle with cancer. She died at home in Mechanicsburg surrounded by her family.
Born and raised in New York, Patty moved to Central Pennsylvania in the 1970s, after earning her bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University, to pursue a career in information technology. She was one of few women to enter this field in the early days of computers.
She spent the first decades of her career at EDS. She later worked for Hewlett-Packard and then Highmark/Blue Shield, where she served as a software quality engineer. Most recently she was employed as a senior business analyst at Thermo Fisher Scientific. Patty received countless professional awards over the years, and at the same time she exemplified a lifetime of devotion to her family. She is survived by her husband, Chuck, and two children, Debra and Chaz.
She was a member at West Shore Baptist Church for over 40 years, where she held several leadership positions and was active in the mission field. She was a longtime member of Vicki’s Tap Pups and loved tap dancing ever since she was a child.
Her viewing and celebration of life service will be held Friday, Oct. 2, 2020 at West Shore Baptist Church, with the viewing from 5-7 p.m. and the service to follow from 7-8 p.m.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, masks will be required and social distancing will be observed.

Patty was a wholesome wonderful human being.. her soul was full of light and her light was clear and honest.
She was my very first cubie and a friend at Camp Hill, EDS. I had just arrived to the U.S., just put myself through Penn State, and got an entry level position at EDS. Everything was overwhelming. But Patty was a warm, secure presence.. a calming shield, protecting me from extraneous outside stimuli and calming my inner perfectionism and fears.
We took walks at lunch sometimes, she helped me look for a house, and always—she was bright and honest, at all times. She was the only person with whom “solving the world problems” was a sincere endeavor… Patty was a hundred percent sincere. Very kind. Wise. And honest.
Several days ago, a memory of her swam into my sleep. My soul was trying to reach her… I didn’t know she was already gone. The loss is brutal.
My heart goes out to her family.
This world has truly lost a wonderful person. My heart goes out to your family who have been through so much already.
I was absolutely shocked when the email started circulating at work yesterday. In June, Patty and I had been waiting until restaurants reopened to get together again for lunch.
I will truly miss our “solve the world problems” discussions on our trips back and forth to Pittsburgh for work.
