Arla Kathryn Mitterling, 101, of Mechanicsburg, passed away peacefully Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, at Camp Hill Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was preceded in death by her husband Russell Mitterling, Sr in 1997; one of her daughters Kay (Mitterling) Grogan in 2006. Arla was born on May 15, 1921, in the family home in Union County to the late Ernest and Erma Klingler.
She graduated from Lewisburg High School. During the years of WW2, she wanted to help her country and joined the Civil Service and worked in the Philadelphia Naval Yard offices during that time. After marriage, she became a housewife with a family to raise. Spent many of her formative years in Enola then later in life in Mechanicsburg. She became a telephone operator at Able One Answering Service in Camp Hill after the children had grown. Arla enjoyed raising her family but also had hobbies including among her favorite’s jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and was also an avid reader. She was a devoted wife to her husband of 51 years and raised 3 children. After her husband passed, she did volunteer work with the Woman’s Group at Chapel Hill for a few years.
She is survived by her son Russell Mitterling, Jr; daughter Donna Mitterling; grandson Keith Grogan; and her sisters June Biglieri, Betty DiCampli and Joy Guldbech and their families
A memorial and celebration of a long life will be held Monday, May 15 at 3:00 PM at the Chapel Hill United Church of Christ, 1019 Mumma Road, Lemoyne PA 17043. A small family funeral service was already held in Port Trevorton on April 12. Flowers may be sent to 115 Skyline Drive, Mechanicsburg PA 17050 close to the day of the memorial.
