
Dolores “Dee” Jane (Famous) McAlister of Enola passed away on January 23, 2017 at her home.
She was born on February 8th, 1934 in Wormleysburg, PA.
She was a graduate of Enola High School, Class of 1952 and participated in High School basketball, softball, and hockey as well as A Capella State and County Choir. She was also active in the Drama and Business Club. After graduation, she attended Shippensburg University and Harrisburg Area Community College.
She was a Charter Member of Enola Emmanuel United Methodist Church and a Lay Conference Member from 1994-2004, a member of the Senior Church Choir (Retired 2001), Camp Counselor United Methodist Conference (Camp Penn, Asbury, and Central Oaks Heights) 1970-1980, and the Genevieve Poppe Volunteer Teacher of the Year Award Neighborhood Center.
Dee was a member of the East Pennsboro Democratic Club and former Committee Woman; the PA State Federation of Democratic Women-2005 Democratic “Woman of the Year” Award, and Tri-County Federation of Democratic Women’s District #9 Club President 2005-2008.
She was an East Pennsboro School Board Director, installed in 1979 until 1983, and served as Secretary to the Board of Delegates Harrisburg Area Community College, PA School Board Association, Parent/Teacher Association- President/Secretary, and initiated the upstart program as an Elementary Reading Volunteer Teacher.
She was a member of the East Pennsboro Board of Commissioners 1992-2003, and re-elected 2005-2009 serving as the Waste Management Representative 1992-2009, Commissioner Representative, Senior Citizen Advisory Board 1992-2009, Recreation Commissioner 1992-2003, and a Member Citizens Emergency Response Team.
In Cumberland County, she served on the Cumberland County Solid Waste Authority, and was appointed by the Cumberland County Commissioners from 1996-2006 as the Authority Treasurer. She also served on the Cumberland County 250th Anniversary Committee.
Dee was a member of the Mary C. Shaner Senior Center since 1979; the West Shore Temple #179, Phythian Sisters-initiated in 1975; Estrelitia Chapter #512-Order of the Eastern Star-initiated in 1979; Bethany Shrine #7-Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem-initiated in 1994.
She was a swimming and diving official with Central PA Chapter PIAA High School & College from 1981-1992; a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor-1979-1992, and received the Presidential Sports Award for Swimming Achievement in July 1991.
She was a secretary for the YWCA Board of Health Education Department in the 1970’s; a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program in the 1970’s; and was a coach, secretary, and team scorekeeper for the East Pennsboro Legion Baseball Association in the 1980’s; a Pony, Midget Teener baseball scorekeeper and Patriot-News Sports Reporter for East Pennsboro and West Fairview in the 1970’s; an associate member of the East Pennsboro Fire Companies; a member of the American Legion Auxiliary-Enola Post #751; and a charter member of the Historical Society of East Pennsboro.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert George McAlister (married on April 30th 1955); a son, Robert “Georgie” McAlister; and parents, William Heim Famous and Daisy May (Bittinger) Famous.
Dee is survived by a daughter, Beth Ann McAlister; a son, Jay Alan McAlister and wife Teri Lynne McAlister; a granddaughter, McKenzy Cierra McAlister all of Enola, PA; a sister, Malvina Elizabeth (Famous-Barninger) Meyer and husband, Peter Meyer of Wormleysburg, PA as well as several nephews and nieces.
Viewing will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017 from 10AM-11AM at Enola Emmanuel United Methodist Church 22 Salt Rd. Enola PA.
Services will be held on Friday at 11AM at the church.
Burial will be in Rolling Green Memorial Park, Camp Hill, PA.
