Robert was an Army Veteran with a rank of SP5 and a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Technology. He retired from Conrail as a signalman, and then continued to work as a jack of all trades, from diesel mechanic, welder, to truck driver, and then cab driver.

Robert was a devout Christian and was a member of the Carlisle Country Church in Carlisle, PA 17013. He enjoyed working in the yard and was a handy man at home with various projects. Known as Pappy ā€œDā€ to his grandsons, they enjoyed running model trains, watching movies, and he kept his mind sharp with Sudoku and crossword puzzles.
