Dorothy Piper Medill died on October 27, 2018, in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, in her daughter’s home. She was 86 years old. The cause of death was a fast-growing brain tumor (glioblastoma), diagnosed three weeks earlier.
Dorothy is survived by two sons, Daniel G. Medill (Leova), Tempe, Arizona, and Thomas P. Medill (Nancy Jan), Petersburg, Pennsylvania; a daughter, Rebecca M. Jekel (Cliff), Camp Hill, Pennsylvania; four granddaughters, four grandsons, and one great-grandson. She is preceded in death by a son, William K. Medill, her husband, Daniel K. Medill, and her two sisters, Janet E. Perry and Julia L. Devinney, both of Spring Run, Pennsylvania.
Dorothy was born on October 26, 1932, in Willow Hill, Pennsylvania, to Sarah (Nimmon) and W. Clift Piper. She graduated in 1956 from the University of Pittsburgh with an R.N., B.S.N. degree. In 1957, she married the late Daniel K. Medill, a lawyer with Fluhrer, Medill, and Shelley in York, Pennsylvania. For Dorothy, nursing was a life vocation. She worked for the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of York in various capacities, including as a visiting nurse, a nurse manager, a member of the board of directors, and the chair of the endowment committee. She also used her nursing skills to provide in-home care for several friends and family members near the ends of their lives, including her husband, Dan, who died in 2006.
Dorothy loved to share with her family and friends the things she most cared about: birds, flowers, gardening, children’s literature, music, travel, poetry, people she admired, and a strong work ethic. She is also remembered for her warm interest in people, whether friends or strangers; her drive and energy; her sense of wonder in all aspects of life; and her active determination to make right whatever she believed to be wrong.
In recent years, she was an active member of the Shady Pine Mennonite Church in Willow Hill, where she wrote the church newsletter and contributed with enthusiasm and commitment to the Vacation Bible School program.
The funeral is on Saturday, November 3, at Shady Pine Mennonite Church in Willow Hill. The viewing will be held at 2 p.m. and a Memorial Service at 3 p.m. Following will be the Burial at the Upper Path Valley Cemetery, 17173 Path Valley Road, Spring Run, and a meal at the church. May God rest the soul of Dorothy Medill…Memory eternal!
Our prayers are with the family, especially the Jekel’s. May you have a special sense of God’s presence, and may He comfort you.
We are sorry about your loss. May God who comforts us in all of our tribulation comfort you at this difficult time. May his promise to swallow up death forever be an anchor of hope. (Isaiah 25:8)
